In its role as independent sustainable development watchdog, the SDC has undertaken its first thematic review. The report is based on site visits and interviews with local authorities, developers and residents and assesses whether the Government has delivered on its promise to create sustainable communities.

The Local Evidence Guide has been produced in response to demand for basic guidance to finding the best available sources of evidence at a local level. It also includes details of various sources of help and advice available across the region.

SELDSW’s Nick Harrison recently attended the fifth international Evidence based policy conference held in London which represented academics and policy-makers from over 15 countries internationally. The conference was packed with useful ideas for how to improve the use of evidence in policy-making including simple and effective solutions such as the Canadian 1-3-25 method of reporting (click below to read more). Ecological Footprint Evidence

logo for ecobudgetThe World Wildlife Fund (WWF) has a selection of useful resources available to help with the assessment of environmental impact and progress towards sustainable development. Their website ‘Ecological Budget UK’ provides access to databases of comparable information together with a new software tool to inform decisions aimed at reducing environmental impact. The ‘Resources and Energy Analysis Programme’ (REAP) was created by the Stockhom Environment Institute (SEI), and can be viewed at the REAP web site.

Education and minority ethnic pupils (FREE Event)

State of the English Cities

State of the English Cities is the most comprehensive study ever undertaken of England's cities and towns.  Published by the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister (ODPM) in March 2006, it focuses on 56 major towns and cities in England (including Swindon, Gloucester, Bristol and Plymouth in the South West) and covers five main themes: demographics, social cohesion, economic competitiveness & performance, liveability, governance & the impact of policy.

Local Information Systems Research

Neighbourhood Renewal Unit logoODPM's Neighbourhood Renewal Unit is currently undertaking a national research project into local regeneration information systems. The report will be published in July 2006 and it follows a scoping study carried out in 2005.

ORRION - NRU Online Race Resource

ORRION is the Online Race Resource for Improving Neighbourhoods.  Its purpose is to assist partnerships to achieve better outcomes for Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) communities.  The resource includes specific treatment of data issues, performance management and engagement of BME communities.  Visit the Renewal.net web site to use this toolkit.

National Evaluation of Local Strategic Partnerships (LSP)

The final report of the formative evaluation and action research research programme 2002-2005.  This report highlights, amongst other things. the need to strengthen the policy framework for LSP development, and the need to take action to build leadership capacity and enhance the contributions of Councillors, and the voluntary, community, and business sectors.

GIS information sharing systems - national review

The Home Office has just published a report which may be of interest about data sharing systems using Geographical Information Systems (GIS).  The report reviews a number of systems from across the country summarising strengths and weaknesses of different approaches.  Ideal if you are setting up or developing such an approach to sharing and analysing data locally.

www.data4nr.net is the new signposting tool designed to assist you to locate data to support the delivery of neighbourhood renewal.  Data4nr helps you to locate resources by floor target theme (you can also filter data sets by: sub-district level, regularity of update, age, gender and ethnic group).  Whilst this web site does not hold the actual data sets, it provides comprehensive descriptions of data and links to their source.

Final Report on Data Provision for Neighbourhood Renewal Now Available

The Office of the Deputy Prime Minister (ODPM) has just published its useful final report on data provision for neighbourhood renewal.  This is a significant piece of work, particularly relevant to people involved in neighbourhood renewal, regeneration, funding, Local Strategic Partnerships, and Local Area Agreements.
