Design: South West Checklist for Sustainable Development - Consultation Launch
Future Foundations, WWF-UK and BRE have launched a consultation on the draft ‘South West Sustainability Checklist for Developments’. The Checklist is a tool designed to help developers and planners in creating more sustainable communities and covers a broad range of planning and development issues from Climate Change, Transport, Ecology, Resources, Placemaking, Business, Community and Buildings.
The draft has been developed by a Task Group of regional and local partners including the South West Regional Assembly, South West Regional Development Agency, Government Office of the South West, Bristol City Council, Housing Corporation, Environment Agency, English Nature and the Somerset Trust for Sustainable Development.
The sustainable development tool already has the backing of a range of national, regional and local partners, as well as being supported in the region's draft Regional Spatial Strategy (RSS) and by the Way Ahead Initiative’s “New Ideas for Sustainable Growth” publication launched in April. It has also been designed to directly complement the Government’s forthcoming Code for Sustainable Homes.
Sustainable Development
With the South West preparing for significant levels of growth over the coming years, tools to help local authorities, developers and other stakeholders deliver sustainable communities will become more important than ever. Regional versions of the Checklist are being rolled out to every English Region in the hope that they will offer a consistent framework for regions and local authorities to set out sustainability criteria based on good and best practice while also offering developers a level playing field.
Consultation ends on 3rd July and a draft version can be downloaded at the our south west web site with a set of consultation questions, a detailed set of FAQ's and an introductory leaflet.
