Improving Funding Advice for Black and Minority Ethnic Groups

A general funding advice service for the Third Sector will always have to work hard to serve everyone who needs it.  George, the regional funding advisers' network, saw the need to focus more on overcoming barriers to communication with Black and Minority Ethnic groups, and the report of its first workshop on the topic is now available.

Peddling and Meddling: Techniques for Tough Times

Matt Harvey, poet, columnist and regular contributor to BBC Radio 4 will be a source of inspiration for South West funding advisers as MC at their annual conference in Taunton on 6 October.

The event run by GEORGE, the South West Funding Advisers' Network, will explore the resources available to voluntary organisations in addition to grants, introducing different approaches to help them survive the recession and become stronger in the future.

Community Grants Programme and information seminars

South West Foundation have organised a series of seminars about the south west region Community Grants programme.

The Community Grants programme is a partnership programme between the South West Foundation, Learning Curve, the Learning and Skills Council and the European Social Fund. Grants are available up to £12,000 for projects led by Voluntary and Community Sector Organisations that give people, who are furthest removed from the labour market, the skills and confidences that they might need to move forward.

Review brings essential knowledge to Third Sector funders

A report just published by Creating Excellence and funded by Lloyds TSB Foundation is believed to be the first survey of its kind for the region.  Funding the Third Sector in the South West.  What do we know?  What do we want to know?  A Knowledge Review for the South West Funders' Forum, by the Evaluation Trust, catalogues and considers almost 150 research reports, evaluations and other evidence from national and regional sources.

Bob Geldof is named Britain's favourite hero as National Lottery searches for local heroes

According to research from The National Lottery, Bob Geldof was favourite among the public (with one in five votes) for using his high profile to benefit others. The research has been carried out to highlight The National Lottery Awards - the organisation's search for its own heroes within local communities across the UK. The Awards celebrate and recognise those people across the UK who have achieved amazing things with Lottery Good Cause funding.

Hot Topics for Funders

The South West Funders' Forum held an open meeting, near Taunton on 17 January 2007, for all those who fund, invest in and provide financial resources for Third Sector organisations in the region.  Attendees from the public, private and social enterprise sectors heard speakers from Government Office for the South West, Capacitybuilders and ACEVO and discussed current issues.

Funding Advice Proves its Worth

Creating Excellence and Funding South West have just published the results of some important research into the impact of different models of funding advice on the Voluntary and Community Sectors (VCS).

The research shows that some models of advice can have a real multiplier effect of the amount of investment brought into an area.
