Older People Evidence Resource Guide

We have included here some basic evidence resources (both quantitative and qualitative) to support delivery around the issue of older people. If you cannot find what you need here, then try here: HELP! Find the evidence you need.

2001 Census data

There are numerous tables in the 2001 census which contain an age dimension. Some of the key datasets are now available on the NOMIS web site through a set of thematic tables. Under table T05 data for people aged 50 and over is available at ward and local authority level for the following topics:

  • Accommodation type
  • Occupancy rating
  • Amenities
  • Lowest floor level
  • Car and van availability
  • Tenure
  • Family type
  • General health
  • Provision of unpaid care
  • Limiting long term illness
  • Qualifications
  • Economic activity
  • Time since last worked
In addition table T06 includes data on pensioner households for the following topics:
  • Accommodation type
  • Occupancy rating
  • Amenities
  • Lowest floor level
  • Central heating
  • Car and van availability
  • Tenure
  • Limiting long term illness

Other demographic information

Population estimates by age and sex for local authority areas published annually by ONS.

Economic data

Claimant count unemployment by age and duration available from the NOMIS Web site

Benefits data

Benefits data for a range of geographies is available from the Neighbourhood Statistics web site.

The data is available by age and relates to:

  • Attendance allowance
  • Incapacity benefit
  • Disability living allowance
  • Severe disablement allowance

Local sources

There is a significant amount of data held locally about older people. Availability and access to this information may vary across the region, initially contact your Local Intelligence Network (LIN) for details or if the requirement is more specialised or region-wide, then contact the appropriate regional organisation below:

Population estimates and projections

Intercensal small area population estimates - most areas of the region process data on patients registered with GPs provided by the Family Health Service Authority.

This is normally stored at post code level and aggregated to an acceptable level before being made more widely available. This is currently the only source of population estimates for small area geographies between censuses.

Contact your Local Intelligence Network (LIN) for details.

Population projections by age and sex - prepared by Planning Authorities throughout the South West and by the Regional Assembly. Data is available by local authority area.

Small area population projections – some sub regions also prepare projections at sub-LA level eg projections by age and sex are available at ward level for the former Avon area (for further information contact your Local Intelligence Network below). Contact your Local Intelligence Network (LIN) for details.

Health, social care and safety

Social Services clients - number of clients by age receiving support from Social Services by service delivered. This data is postcoded and can be aggregated to larger geographies for wider publication. Contact your Local Intelligence Network (LIN) for details.

Health statistics -there are a significant number of statistics relating to health. The Key datasets include:

  • Mortality from all causes
  • Mortality from accidents
  • Mortality from all cancers
  • Mortality from all circulatory diseases
  • Mortality from malignant melanoma
  • Mortality from lung cancer
  • Mortality from strokes
  • Mortality from coronary heart disease

For lower level geography eg. ward and local data contact your Local Intelligence Network (LIN) for details.
