SELD Evaluation Resource Guide: Resources
The following section provides links to useful freely available resources including toolkits, handbooks, guidance and case-studies which you may find useful for the planning and delivery of your evaluation. There are lots of resources out there, but these represent ones which have been used and recommended by experts and practitioners working in regeneration.
Renewal.net is the online guide to what works in Neighbourhood Renewal. The site features an ever growing number of useful resources around evaluation in the context of Neighbourhood Renewal delivery. Just type 'evaluation' into the search box on the website and review the full list of resources available.

One that's definitely worth a look is 'How to evaluate a project' in the Track progress toolkit which features an overview along with case studies, sample documents, evaluation toolkits, policy guidance and related research.

The New Economic Foundation (NEF) have designed various evaluation and social auditing resources; this one was designed specifically for the evaluation of Neighbourhood Renewal. The spirit of
Prove it! is about keeping evaluation simple, manageable and possible within the limited resources that small-scale projects have available to them.

The government's Improvement & Development Agency (I&DeA) have produced a checklist tool for benchmarking successful partnership practice which has been thoroughly tested across a range of regeneration delivery partnerships.

Produced to support the Joseph Rowntree Foundation (JRF) Neighbourhood Programme, the guide provides step-by-step advice on how to evaluate a community project. Designed to be of use to residents, neighbourhood practitioners and policy makers at local, regional and national levels, it can be downloaded free from their website.

Produced for the DETR by Roger Tym and Partners (RTP) and the University of the West of England (UWE), the online guidebook 'Local evaluation for regeneration partnerships' is a good starting point for considering how to go about planning and carrying out a local evaluation.

A useful and comprehensive handbook produced for officers working for the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). Whilst designed for practitioners working in an international environment, the techniques and theory are sound and entirely transferable to local regeneration contexts here in the UK. Clear and concise practical guidance on various subjects including monitoring and evaluation, which has now been revised 15 times using feedback from practitioners. Plymouth Monitoring & Evaluation Group (PMEG) have produced this straightforward guide to monitoring and evaluation drawing on the experience of local partners and various other resources also featured here.

The Evaluation Trust has produced a toolkit for use with community and voluntary organisations. It contains advice on different methods and how to apply them, as well as resources and visual aids.

Regularly updated news, reports, training course and events relating to monitoring and evaluation (mainly for international development audience). Stimulating and useful for keeping up to date with recent trends and developments in evaluation practice.

From the government's SureStart programme, the national evaluation generated some good examples of evaluation methods and reports, including lists of questions used in surveys and evaluation guidance. A good way of drawing on the collective experience of all 6 years' worth of evaluations from 524 programmes from across the country.

Bristol's regeneration community offer a variety of useful tools and documents on their Bristol Forward research and evaluation pages.

The national council for Education and Learning in Wales (ELWA) have produced a useful, concise, step-by-step guide to evaluation.

The New Opportunity Fund (NOF) provide a variety of general research and evaluation guidance including:

The National Science Foundation (NSF) present a user-friendly guide to mixed-method evaluations from the national science foundation. Robust approaches but not always appropriate for regeneration contexts.

The Northern Ireland Council for Voluntary Action (NICVA) have brought together some case study examples of how small and medium sized voluntary and community organisations have gone about measuring their impact.

The Arts Council for England have produced a guide designed to help organisations and individuals evaluate arts education projects.

The International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) provide a useful and straightforward guide to evaluation in rural settings (mainly overseas orientated).

The Quality in Study Support project running in Canterbury Christ Church University provides advice on measuring attendance, attitudes and achievements of pupils and has developed software and tools to help you to do this.

A very useful resource book for participatory evaluation exercises with children and young people produced during the evaluation of the national children's fund. Free to download from the website.

The West Midlands Regeneration Centre of Excellence (REGEN WM) includes a selection of useful guidance and resources around evaluation of regeneration programmes and projects. The site features answers to questions such as: Why evaluate? How do I evaluate? When is the right time to evaluate? and How do I make the most of the evaluation?

CIVICUS, the global alliance for citizen participation have produced a useful 'nuts & bolts' toolkit on setting up a monitoring and evaluation system for a project or programme.

The World Bank's IEG, founded in 1973 reports directly to the executive board to inform the Bank's work across the world. Their website features a selection of robust evaluation tools and approaches.

The Kellogg Foundation has been using some 75 years' worth of breakfast cereal profits to building the capacity of individuals, communities, and institutions to solve their own problems. They offer a useful evaluation toolkit and handbook which can be downloaded free from the site.
