Empowering Communities: New Empowerment Research

The value of informal learning for engagement and empowerment,  and the likely effects of cuts in funding to Community Empowerment Networks across the country (there are three in the South West), are discussed in two research reports that will be of interest to the community of engagement and empowerment professionals.

The first, published at the end of March, evaluates the Bristol Neighbourhood Renewal Learning Programme which ran from March 2007 to March 2008, when NR funding ended.  It delivered a range of training, events and visits for residents and workers of the eight Neighbourhood Renewal areas across the city.

‘A huge success', this programme used an accessible and informal style to engage a range of residents, and proved itself as a springboard for training progression.  Read the evaluation report here.

The effect of the loss of funding for Community Empowerment Networks is investigated in a new report by Urban Forum.  What will the reduced capacity resulting from this mean for effective community voice in the context of the new Duty to Involve?  Read the report here.

And watch this space for eight reports on case study themes, all based on South West organisations, ranging from a large city, through rural areas, to Black & Minority Ethnic groups, and younger and older people.
