News bites: National Centre goes to Leeds!

The Deputy Prime Minister announced today that the new National Centre for Sustainable Community Skills will be located in Leeds.

John Prescott used the first session of the Sustainable Communitites Summit today to announce that he had decided the new national skills centre for sustainable communities will be in Leeds. He also announced a new name for the centre, The Academy for Sustainable Communities (ASC).

The news will come as a bit of a disappointment to Birmingham which was the other city "bidding" for the centre. Mr Prescott announced that the new National Centre will "bring the professions together" to work on the complex issues facing our cities and towns.

During his speech he praised the work of the Mayor of Chicago, Richard Daley, in developing a city with a real "wow factor" - a phrase he used repeatedly in a speech which did tend to emphasise the physical environment over the other key issues of service improvement and community empowerment.

The session was chaired by BBC personality, Nick Ross, and included speeches from Richard Daley (more later) and the EU Commissioner for Regional Policy, Danuta Hubner.
