News From Other Organisations: What is local:vision?

A report was published recently by The Office of the Deputy Prime Minister on 'Citizen Engagement and Public Service: Why Neighbourhoods Matter'.  The report focuses on two challenges facing this country: a) to secure sustainable improvements in our public services and b) to re-engage citizens with the institutions of government.

The report provides a good outline of how these two issues are linked, how expectation of improved service delivery has come through seeing standards rising elsewhere and through access to instant services via the web, and how all of this will put pressure on public services to respond. The report suggests a national Charter for Neighbourhoods, setting out the principles for new and innovative 'neighbourhood arrangement' showing how services will be provided and how community bodies and public sector bodies might develop community participation. The report says it will be taking the debate forward through a series of national and regional seminars, workshops and meetings with local government and representatives of public, private, voluntary, and community sectors over the comming months.  More details can be found on the Communities and Local Government Website
