Networking: LGWP Masterclass - Making Strong and Prosperous Communities

There was very good support for a masterclass held on the 26th March looking at ‘Making strong and Prosperous Communities'.

The objective of the day was to consider how organisations need to prepare for the opportunities under the local government white paper, and the skills and capacities needed to be created to provide more sustainable communities.  Consideration was also given to what the white paper has to offer organisations and the region as a whole.

A series of masters were assembled to provide the audience with new insights and approaches as the white paper progresses through its course to becoming an act.

Richard Sheard, Government Office for the South West (view presentation)  gave a overview of the white paper.  This was then followed by break out sessions in which delegates attended different themes included within the local government white paper.

These included:

1. Community Cohesion - David Curtis, Government Office for the South West (see presentation and notes from this session)

2. Climate Change - Paul Crossley, Leader of Bath & North East Somerset Council (see presentation and notes from this session)

3. Strong Cities - Professor Martin Boddy, University of West of England, Bristol (see presentation and notes from this session)

4. Empowered Communities - Charles Woodd, Community Empowerment Division (CLG) (see presentation and notes from this session)

We were encouraged by the positive feedback from the event and we hope it provided a useful opportunity to learn and share ideas.

Details of presentations and notes from the breakout sessions can be found by following the links above to the documents from each session on our website.
