In its role as independent sustainable development watchdog, the SDC has undertaken its first thematic review. The report is based on site visits and interviews with local authorities, developers and residents and assesses whether the Government has delivered on its promise to create sustainable communities.
We found that the approach in the current housing programme to tackle housing shortages and housing market decline has constrained the government's efforts to deliver on its sustainability goals.
This is highlighted in the key opportunities for improvement that we have identified:
· further integration of environmental impacts into the programme
· better co-ordination of public funding and wider service provision
· more effective and meaningful community consultation and engagement.
