Networking: Completion of the multi-million Symes Avenue re-development

The opening in November 07 of the @symes community building and Morrison's superstore marks the completion of a major civic regeneration project in South Bristol.  The creation of the new shopping centre for Hartcliffe and Withywood, along with 350 new jobs, has been achieved through the redevelopment of the previous 1950's shopping centre in Symes Avenue.

This project has been a partnership between Hartcliffe and Withywood Community Partnership (HWCP), Bristol, City Council, the South West of England Regional Development Agency and Wm Morrison Supermarkets PLC.

The Symes Avenue area of Hartcliffe has long been a symbol of the economic plight of this South Bristol neighbourhood. Substantially derelict since the ‘80's the improvement of this key site has been the ‘apple in the eye' of many a regenerator of the past.

The project won the regeneration award at the recent South West Commercial Property Awards ceremony held at Bristol City's Ashton Gate ground.

It would be hard to overestimate the achievement this represents for the local community and its Community Partnership and they deserve our congratulations. Let's hope this development now thrives and provides a focal point for shopping and community life in Hartcliffe for many years to come.

;@symes is the new community building, run and managed by local people as part of Hartcliffe and Withywood Community Partnership (HWCP).

It hosts a range of new services, training facilities, meeting rooms, crèche and facilities for community use.  Other benefits of the scheme include a new children's play area; better car parking; landscape improvements; public art and a petrol station; new community transport provision bus; new community-run youth projects in the area, as well as new training schemes for local residents.

The building has been designed to be very accessible, friendly and to a high environmental standard, with a balcony design based on old maps of the area. It was awarded funding from EDF Energy's Green Fund towards renewable energy technology, with match funding from the South West Regional Development Agency.
