'Just Rewards campaign' launched
The 'Just Rewards campaign' has been launched to get a better deal for South West's unpaid heroes.
New Start magazine is campaigning for a fair deal for community representatives who work tirelessly to make government regeneration schemes successful.
The magazine are calling for the reform of benefit rules that prevent members of the UK's poorest communities from receiving just rewards for the efforts they put in and the expertise they provide.
New Start believe it is unjust that local councillors and quango board members should receive generous allowances for their contributions to public life, while pensioners, unemployed people or single parents risk having their benefits withdrawn if they are recompensed for their work.
To address these injustices the Department for Work and Pensions should raise the 'earnings disregard' for those who receive state benefits if they are contributing to government regeneration schemes, and offer a fair scale of compensation to those who work at board level to make these programmes happen.
