News From Other Organisations: Johnnie goes to Exeter - to discuss National Centre

On the 13th of January 2005 the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister came to Exeter! The reason for the visit? They wanted to consult with the region over plans to establish a national centre for sustainable communities skills which will help people involved in regeneration and sustainable communities work.

Logo of the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister Exactly what this centre will do is still to be decided, and the staff from ODPM came to St. George's Hall to hear from a selection of people from across the region that may have an interest in the new centre.

The meeting, gave a cautious welcome to the idea, accepting that there were some tasks which were better done at the national level, such as national lobbying, the establishment of a national framework for learning about sustainable communities work, and on-line libraries.

However, everyone expressed concern that a national centre might duplicate the work of the new regional centres, including Creating Excellence. What was very clear was that those attending did not see a role for such a centre in the direct delivery of training to local partnerships.

In order to get the opinions of as wide a group of people as possible the ODPM has now produced a questionnaire and is asking as many people as possible to complete it.
